Based on studies about racism in higher education and on testimonies collected from documents concerning the Centennial of the Japanese Immigration to Brazil and from the news, the article presents a reflective historical analysis on phenotypes and cultures as racism and xenophobia sources in Brazil, with important repercussions in education. As for the phenotypical issue, it resumes and dialogues with the classic work by Oracy Nogueira about “mark prejudice”. Lastly, it analyses the role of public policies, such as the SISU, including the adoption of racial quotas, with the purpose of promoting educational equity and overcoming racism, discrimination and xenophobia.

Keywords: Racism.
