Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems today, compromising the health and quality of life of populations. The World Health Organization estimates that 4 million more people die prematurely in the world from air pollution. Objective: To evaluate the association between hospitalizations for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in children and elderly people in the city of Santos. Method: Ecological study of time series that included patients hospitalized in hospitals associated with SUS, between 2016 and 2019, in the city of Santos, for cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases. Data were obtained from PM10, PM2.5, O3 and NO2 levels, minimum temperature and average humidity from the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo. The non-generalized linear model was used. Results: It was observed that pollutants are correlated with each other. There is an acute effect of exposure to air pollution in the hospitalizations of children and the elderly for respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Conclusion: Even within acceptable air quality limits, the deleterious effects of exposure to pollutants still cause damage to the respiratory and cardiovascular health of residents of Santos.
