Abstract

The continuous insertion of pharmaceuticals into the environment requires new technological strategies to remove them from domestic and industrial wastewater. With the objective
of knowing the recent state of the art on the biodegradation of diclofenac, the present work
allowed us to identify the current stage of research on the biodegradation of this drug by
microorganisms, confirming the need to increase research efforts for the prospection of
mineralizing microorganisms. It also contributed to alerting about the importance of studies
opting for a robust experimental design, aiming to prove the action of the microorganism in
the drug, through the inclusion of adequate abiotic controls, and the safety of the process,
through the evaluation of acute and chronic toxicity, in several trophic levels.
