Abstract

Literature is the written register of the evolution of society, therefore of extreme importance
to reveal feminine accomplishments. By doing so, a constant rise of female characters acting
roles reserved only to male characters has been continuously noticed. Such is the case of the
detective figure. However, female detectives are little discussed in the academic field. Bearing
this in mind, this article aims at analyzing the differences and similarities there are among
the female detectives in the following novels: Miss Marple in Agatha Christie’s Sleeping Murder (1976); Enola Holmes in Nancy Springer’s The Case of the Missing Marquess (2006); and
Verônica Torres in Andrea Killmore’s Bom dia, Verônica (2016). To reach this goal, studies
by Boileau and Narcejac (1991) on typology and textual genre; different historical contexts;
the influence of feminism and Simone de Beauvoir’s concept of sisterhood were taken into
account with the purpose of showing how machism and patriarchy still prevail.
