Abstract

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) generate a considerable volume of waste in their operations and are responsible for applying measures for the correct handling of the waste produced, as provided by law. In view of this, this research aims to analyze the situation of the environmental programs of the Federal Institutes in Brazil. To achieve this, we opted for a qualitative case study, by means of a questionnaire sent by e-mail, and documentary research on the official websites with content analysis. As results, it was identified that only one educational institution fully develops the environmental management projects as established by the national environmental legislation, especially especially the programs of the Environmental Agenda for Public Administration (A3P), the Solid Waste Management Plan (PRGS) and the Sustainable Logistic Plan (PLS). It was possible to list the individual implementation situation of these environmental programs by each institution and their respective availability to the general population. The main difficulty identified was the lack of feedback sent to the institutions requesting information about the environmental programs developed. It is believed that this work will contribute to the improvement and implementation of environmental programs in the institutions, besides being a warning for a more effective engagement of these education centers.
