Abstract

This article aims to analyze the approach and teaching methods adopted by the Duolingo application, a digital platform for foreign language learning. To this end, we present a historical survey of the most relevant methods and approaches to language teaching, comparing their characteristics to the lessons proposed by the application. With theoretical support from Vygotsky's (1984) and Wallon's (1997) social interactionist development and learning theories, Skinner's behaviorist (1957; 1974) and Ausubel's cognitivist (1980) theories, added to the definition and main characteristics of the teaching methods and approach of foreign languages, we can say that on the Duolingo platform the adoption of the Translation and Grammar Method and the Audiolingual Method is evident.
