Called by many names, the decentralized and controversial Anonymous legion mobilized
thousands of people around the world with hacktivist actions that went beyond computer
screens and directly interfered with governments, large corporations and the press. In Folha
de S. Paulo, one of the main vehicles in Brazil, Anonymous was mentioned for the first time
in 2008 and has continued to be featured over the years. Based on this, the scientific article
is based on the bachelor’s dissertation “Anonymous in the press: Analysis of media coverage
made by the Folha de S. Paulo website” and proposes to synthesize the results obtained from
quantitative and qualitative analysis developed in the initial research. 13 years (2008 – 2020)
of publications were tabulated, broken down into 366 texts. Based on journalism theories
and discourse analysis techniques, in addition to focusing on hacktivism and the history of
anonymous and Folha de S. Paulo, this paper exposes layers of the portrayal of Anonymous
to the public over the years and the editorial decisions made by the coverage.
