O DISCURSO DO JORNAL A TRIBUNA SOBRE A ELEIÇÃO E A CASSAÇÃO DE ESMERALDO TARQUÍNIO

This paper analyzes the A Tribuna newspaper’s coverage of the election of lawyer and then
state representative Esmeraldo Tarquínio for mayor of Santos in the year 1968. Brazil was
under a civil-military dictatorship, and Tarquínio had his term revoked before his inauguration. Consequently, Santos, a city in which the opposition had strenght, lost its political
autonomy for 15 years. Having the French school of discourse analysis as a theoretical foundation, this study identifies biases in the coverage of the newspaper, which was a supporter
of the dictatorial regime at the same time in which it defended the city’s autonomy. In that
way, the main circumstances of that election and the newspaper’s coverage are exposed, as
is the influence of these two contradictory discourses in the coverage concerning Tarquínio.
